David and Goliath in the West

David and Goliath in the West

This year as usual I recovered an old Uncle J comic to be reprinted in a renewed and deluxe edition as a gift for his birthday. This time, the choice fell on a version of the Lewis and Clark expedition, unfortunately left unfinished, and accomplished between 1970 and 1976. It was published by a minor but enthusiastic publisher, the new Nerbini by Alfonso Pichierri. But that’s another story.

Now, months later, I have purchased a color hardcover volume published by one of the most prestigious Franco-Belgian publishing houses. I was hesitant to give it to Uncle J as it could seem – apparently – a comparison.  I also feared it would be at the expense of the latter. Now having in my hands the “luxurious hardcover” I must, allow me to say, with a certain pleasure, recognize that the reduction we considered “poor” made by Uncle J to 15 years and this produced with all the “firepower” of a great publishing house is definitely to Uncle J’s advantage. In the end, the comic of a teenager with no means is on par with if not superior. IMHO

Born today Gian Luigi Bonelli

Giovanni Luigi Bonelli (22 December 1908 – 12 January 2001) made his professional debut in 1926, when his first poems and articles were published in several Italian magazines. During the 1930s, he shifted his focus to comics, and became one of the editors at the publishing house Editrice Vecchi S.A. In 1945 he collaborated with publisher Giovanni De Leo on ‘Il Cow Boy’, and with Antonio Canale on ‘Yorga’. In 1946 and 1947, he edited ‘La Perla Nera’ for Franco Caprioli. After many more collaborations, in 1948 he created the famous ‘Tex Willer’, originally drawn by Aurelio Galleppini.
