Born today Raffaele Paparella

Raffaele Paparella (26 December 1915 – 11 November 2001)  made his debut in 1936 in Asso Sportivo and La Piccola Italiana with some sports and humorous illustrations. From 1940 he worked for Il Vittorioso, where he illustrated ‘Il Terrore del Colorado’, ‘Il Segredo di Yuma’ and some episodes of ‘Marco Valli’ and the series ‘I Tre Gli’ and ‘Ted’, all written by Giovanni Luigi Bonelli. In addition, he was present in Topolino with ‘Cabiria’, ‘La Compagnia dei Sette’ and ‘Satana del Universo’, as well as in L’Audace with ‘I Conquistari dello Spazio’ and ‘I Crotiati’. Paparella also adapted novels by Salgari, such as ‘Capitan Tempesta’.

Luciano Bottaro (16 November 1931 – 25 November 2006)  is best known as one of the classic Italian artists of Disney comics, together with Romano Scarpa and Giovan Battista Carpi. Born in Rapallo, he began his career illustrating for the magazine Lo Scolaro in 1949. He created such characters as ‘Gio Polpetta’ and the mushroom ‘Pon Pon’ for the magazine. During this period, he also made satirical drawings for La Domenica del Corriere and La Domenica Quiz.

The Italian comic artist and illustrator Giorgio Bordini (7 October 1927 – 14 November 1999)  was born and educated in Venice. He teamed up with Romano Scarpa and cooperated on several advertising animations, as well as the animation film ‘La Piccola Fiammiferaia’ in 1953. He moved to Venezuela in 1955, where he became head of the art department of Radio Caracas Television. He returned to Italy in 1961, and joined Scarpa again to begin a longtime collaboration with the Italian Disney production for Topolino. Initially illustrating scripts by Guido Martina, Carlo Chendi, Rodolfo Cimino or Jerry Siegel, Bordini began writing scripts himself in 1977. He also created the comic characters ‘He and She’, which were published in Il Giornale di Barbie, and briefly cooperated on the German ‘Fix und Foxi’ series at Kauka.

Rinaldo Dami (29 September 1923 – 15 February 1979, Italy) who was also known under the anglicized version of his name, Roy d’Ami, was a versatile creator of comics and the head of one of Italy’s most prestigious art agencies of the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Crimson del Grappa, Rinaldo Dami was taken prisoner by the British in North Africa in March 1943. He was sent to a camp in Algeria, and then to the island of Malta. Upon his return in Milan in 1947, Dami started working in the advertising and animation field.

He drew his first comics in 1948, when he found work at the publishing company Cremona Nuova. There, he illustrated series like ‘Blek e Gionni’, ‘Dixy Scott’ and ‘Il Piccolo Sergente’, in a style influenced by Milton Caniff. During the early 1950s, he drew a great many western comics for Audace, including ‘Mani in Alto’, ‘Gordon Jim’, ‘Il Sergente York’, ‘Cherry Brandy’, ‘La Pattuglia dei Bufalli’, ‘Il Ritorno dei Tre Bill’, the Bonelli scripted ‘Rio Kid’ and ‘Pecos Bill’, scripted by Guido Martina. Later on, he created several strips for Corriere dei Piccoli, such as the humorous ‘Scuterino’ and ‘Indianetto’, as well as several scenarios for other artists, such as Carlo Porciani (‘Davy Crockett’, ‘Haywatha’), Leone Cimpellin (‘Nerofumo’), Paolo Piffarerio (‘Apollo il Pollo’) and Ferdinando Tacconi (‘Moby Dick’). Also, he created ‘Piccolo Bisonte’ in Corrierino.

Mantova nei comics

Mantova fa da sfondo nell’avventura ” Khaïr le More” di Barbe Rouge (testo Jean-Michel Charlier, disegno Victor Hubinon), pagina 32. Una Mantova un po strana, più vicina alle architetture di Verona e con delle montagne sullo sfondo inesistenti per una città locata nel mezzo della piatta pianura padana.
