Forgotten comic strips: Highlights of History

Forgotten comic strips: Highlights of History

Highlights of History by J. Carroll Mansfield

The strip began November 17 1924 and ran until at least November 22, 1941. In the early days it was a caption strip heavy on the history. Eventually word balloons were added and soon even the stories became more like a Revolutionary War era adventure strip although real-life characters continued their appearances. The heroes were forest rangers Jack Blount and the lad Kip Kirby along with their sidekicks White Buffalo and Pineknot. The strip was very close to the later DC comic book storyline on Tomahawk and his rip-roaring rangers. By the forties Highlights of History had returned to its original form, telling the story of Jenghis Khan in the old caption strip format.

Adam‘s adventure Rome Open City episode 14

Rome, Open City (Italian: Roma città aperta, also released as Open City) is a 1945 Italian neorealist war drama film directed by Roberto Rossellini and co-written by Sergio Amidei and Federico Fellini. Set in Rome in 1944, the film follows a diverse group of characters coping under the Nazi occupation, and centers on a Resistance fighter trying to escape the city with the help of a Catholic priest. The title refers to Rome being declared an open city after 14 August 1943. It forms the first third of Rosselini’s “Neorealist Trilogy”, followed by Paisan (1946) and Germany, Year Zero (1948).

Open City is considered one of the most important and representative works of Italian neorealism, and an important stepping stone for Italian filmmaking as a whole. It was one of the first post-war Italian pictures to gain major acclaim and accolades internationally, winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival and being nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar at the 19th Academy Awards. It launched director Rosselini, screenwriter Fellini, and actress Anna Magnani into the international spotlight.

Mathias first series: Completed

Mathias first series: Completed

Are the people around us really what they seem?

ACTORS: Mathias is a blond 10 year old. He’s knowledgeable for his age as a result of his somewhat cosmopolitan education. Anna is a freckly 10 year-old redhead. Orphaned at an early age. Lively, intelligent and with a searching mind, she’s the one with the sense of humour and sharp one liners.

STRUCTURE & TONE OF THE STORIES: The two protagonists in this series are children and, despite their superhuman potentialities, they behave as such. They always travel accompanied by an adult, they never go out late at night and wherever they stay they’re in the company of relatives. It is within this context that the storyline develops in its own way. They’re not out to put the world to rights, yet they are endowed with a strong sense of justice and they seek to do good in the face of evil.
