Born today Gianluigi Coppola (16 April 1928 – 24 August 2015, Italy)
Gianluigi “Didi” Coppola was an Italian comic artist, painter and illustrator. He was born in Chiavari in 1928, and at 21 he moved to Milan to start his career as a draftsman. He joined Ferdinando Tacconi in the creation of ‘Nat del Santa Cruz’ and Franco Paludetti on ‘Sciuscià’, two of the most characterizing Italian comics of the post-war period. In 1954 he left for London, where he worked for two decades as a comic artist, illustrator and graphic designer. He drew British comics like ‘Billy the Kid’ for the Amalgamated Press, the Sunday page of Harry Bishop‘s ‘Gun Law’ for the Sunday Express, as well as ‘Scoop Donovan’ and ‘Battler Britton’ for the Fleetway libraries. He made illustrations for publishers like Penguin, Pan, Corgi and Granada, and for periodicals like the Sunday Times, The Observer and Forum. He furthermore worked for advertisements through agencies like Young and Rubicam.
He also continued to work for the Italian market. With Lele Luzzati and Flavio Costantini he made illustrations for a children’s encyclopedia, and he made cartoons for the adult magazines Playboy and Penthouse. The publishing house Bonelli hired him in the 1990s to draw several installments of the comic book series ‘Dylan Dog’ and ‘Martin Mystère’, while he also made illustrations for educational books published by Cideb in Rapallo. Coppola eventually devoted himself to painting portraits and seascapes. He passed away in Genoa in August 2015

Christine J. Carella is a young woman living alone in a large, modern, anonymous city which could be Los Angeles and which provides the stage for all kinds of adventures.
The problems that give rise to her adventures are the same everyone has: work, money, relationships with others, people bullying her, love and so on.
What can you say about a character who was never born?
She was beautiful! And intelligent.
She loved Moon River sung by Audrey Hepburn and she cries with Casablanca.
Chris Carella is a mixture of drama, comedy, and romance,(comedy-drama, or “dramedy”) and is one of the good examples of comics script. But the series was never published. The Italian comics are still the same as those of the 1950’s, only: bang! bang! aarhg… shot! kill him! etc…

Pubblichiamo la seconda puntata di Chris Carella, fumetto nato dai testi di Giancarlo Malagutti e che avrebbe dovuto avere gli splendidi disegni di Sergio Zaniboni. Purtroppo vari impedimenti, sia terreni che non, l’hanno confinata nel limbo delle storie mai pubblicate. Questa è una versione con gli ottimi storyboard di Manlio Truscia e Giancarlo Malagutti.
Una storia a cui sono molto legata, perché ambientata nella mia città dove vivo, perché le vicende narrate mi possono essere vicine. E perché è molto bella. La storia.
Inoltre la protagonista ha (avrebbe dovuto avere) il volto di mamma.

Giorgio Scudellari (10 April 1908, Chile – 1966, Brazil)
Giorgio Scudellari was born in Chile, but lived and worked in Italy for most of his life. He was part of the initial staff of the publishing house Nerbini in Firenze. He was present in the first issue of L’Avventuroso‘ in 1934 with ‘Dal Deserto alla Giungla’. During that same year, he drew some extra material for the Italian publication of the first ‘Mickey Mouse’ newspaper strip by Walt Disney, Ub Iwerks and Win Smith, published in the Supplemento di Topolino. Scudellari drew several other adventure and humorous comics for Nerbini. In 1938, he made a weekly ‘Pinocchio’ strip with writer Paolo Lorenzini.
He left Nerbini and began cooperations with other publishers, such as Mancuso (‘L’Eroico’, 1945), and Bonelli (‘Il Giustiziere del West’, 1948). He also illustrated several episodes of ‘Fulmine’ between 1946 and 1950. He eventually focused on animation work, and cooperated on Anton Gino Domeneghini‘s film ‘La Rosa di Bagdag‘ in 1950. He then participated in the creation of several short advertising films fro IMA Film in Milan. During the 1950s, he cooperated with Lo Scolaro, and for a brief time, also worked in advertising animation with Giulio Chierchini. He died in Brazil in 1966.

Angelo Agostini (8 April 1843, Italy – 23 January 1910, Brazil)
Although born in Italy, Angelo Agostini can be considered the first Brazilian comics artist. After making illustrations and caricatures for magazines like Diabo Coxo, Cabrião and Revista Arlequim, Agostini produced a continuing story in images for Vida Fuminense in 1869. The comic was called ‘As Aventuras de Nhô Quim, ou Impressous de Uma Viagem à Côrte’ and ran for nine episodes of two pages each. For Revista Illustrada he continued with ‘As Aventura de Zé Caipora’ in 1883. Although this comic was often interrupted, the series counts 35 episodes. In the early twentieth century appeared the O Tico-Tico magazine, for which Agostini illustrated the title.
In 1984 the Brazilian comics awards Prêmio Angelo Agostini were named after him.

Ses deux premiers épisodes ont été publiés en 1939-1940 dans l’hebdomadaire L’Audace, puis un troisième, dessiné par Antonio Canale, en 1946 dans Topolino.
