Friday Foster first Afro-American character
Friday Foster was an American newspaper comic strip, created and written by Jim Lawrence and later continued by Jorge Longarón. It ran from 1970 to 1974 and was notable for featuring the first Afro-American woman as the titular character in a comic strip.

Adam‘s Rome Open City War & Love episode 76
Rome, Open City (Italian: Roma città aperta, also released as Open City) is a 1945 Italian neorealist war drama film directed by Roberto Rossellini and co-written by Sergio Amidei and Federico Fellini. Set in Rome in 1944, the film follows a diverse group of characters coping under the Nazi occupation, and centers on a Resistance fighter trying to escape the city with the help of a Catholic priest. The title refers to Rome being declared an open city after 14 August 1943. It forms the first third of Rosselini’s “Neorealist Trilogy”, followed by Paisan (1946) and Germany, Year Zero (1948).
Open City is considered one of the most important and representative works of Italian neorealism, and an important stepping stone for Italian filmmaking as a whole. It was one of the first post-war Italian pictures to gain major acclaim and accolades internationally, winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival and being nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar at the 19th Academy Awards. It launched director Rosselini, screenwriter Fellini, and actress Anna Magnani into the international spotlight.

Un bel giorno decidiamo di andare a risciacquare le tavole nei mari dei Tropici e partiamo per una lunga vacanza per l’isola di Cuba. Siamo curiosi di vedere i luoghi che abbiamo salgarianamente immaginato e illustrato. E’ la Cuba prima della caduta del Muro, non ancora presa d’assalto da troppi turisti ( spesso cialtroni ), paese splendido, gente magnifica…
Ci sembra di essere magicamente entrati nel nostro fumetto. Una sera, in una buia cantina che finge ( pur fungendo ) di essere un bar, facciamo conoscenza con il pianista che suona piú per sé che per i distratti e piuttosto cotti avventori.
E’ notte fonda quando andiamo a bere l’ultimo bicchiere di rum in quello che lui chiama “il mio ufficio” : una branda, due sedie e alcune stampelle per i pochi abiti appese a una corda tesa tra due pareti che si guardano troppo da vicino. « Io sono nato artista » ci dice con solennità. E chi ne dubita ? « Qui sono con… e guardate questa ! quando ho suonato insieme a… », e quindi foto della Rivoluzione…
E all’improvviso : eccolo ! Impossibile ma è Lui ! Seduto allo stesso pianoforte che suona ogni sera il nostro ospite, c’è Adam. Dobbiamo saperne di piú : chi è ? che fa ? ma dove si trova ora ?

Martin Landau, Mission cartoonist Impossible
E’ noto che Martin Landau, ‘Cleopatra’ (1963), ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’ (1989), ‘Ed Wood’ (1994),’ Mission Impossible’ (1967-1969), ‘Space: 1999′ (1975-1977) fu assistente di Gus Edson per la strip ‘The Gumps’ distribuita dal New York Daily News nel periodo 1940/50. Fu anche autore delle vignette della serie ‘Pitching Horseshoes’, firmandosi Marty Landau, nel 1950.

Xavier Cugat dal cinema alla caricatura
Xavier Cugat, attore e compositore, quando già un famoso divenne pure caricaturista. Le sue caricature affiancavano articoli di colore che festeggiavano il compleanno di personaggi famosi. Il box, testo e disegni, dal titolo “Today’s Birthday” fu distribuito dall’agenzia King Features Syndicate dal 1943 al 1944.
